Podi Idli | பொடி இட்லி | Spicy Idli

Podi idli gives a twist from the regular tiffin varieties. This finger-licking Podi Idli can be served as an evening snack or as tiffin variety. When I am bugged of regular tiffin varieties, I prepare this spicy Podi Idli. Toss the idli in spicy idli podi and enjoy the bowl of delicious snack in few minutes.

This is perfect for lunch-box or you can even pack it while traveling. This never gets dry because of the idli powder, sesame oil mixture. Mini idli's are kids friendly food, even picky eater will love this. Do check my other recipe using mini idli's here - Sambar Idli

You can either prepare this recipe using left-over idli's or fresh mini-idli moulds depending on your convenience. If you don't have mini idli moulds, you can use cookie cutter or cube the normal idli's. I have posted both the version below..

Ingredients :-

------------------
 Idli Batter    2 Cups
 Idli Podi   2 tbsp
 Curry leaves   few
 Gingelly Oil   2 tbsp
 Ghee (for greasing)    1 tbsp
 Mustard   ¾ tsp
 Hing   Pinch

Method :-
--------------

1). Grease the idly plates with very little ghee. Pour the  batter into the mini-idli mould and steam it for 8-10mins. Once done, scoop out the idli's and cut it into wedges or desired shape or bite sized pieces (if using regular idli's). I have used cookies cutter for few and cubed the rest. Avoid this step, if you have mini idli moulds.
2). Heat gingelly oil in a pan, add mustard, curry leaves and hing. Once the mustard splutters, add the idli podi with a pinch of salt and stir well.
3). Immediately, add the steamed mini-idlis  and mix until the idli podi coats well with the idli. Saute for 1-2 minutes  on low heat till it gets a nice brown color.

4). Similarly you can do it with the cubed idli pieces. Add the cubed idlis to the podi mixture(step 2) and toss it well. Give a quick stir and fry it in a low flame till it becomes golden color and crispy.

Serve them as they are or prick them using tooth picks and serve as an appetizer.
Notes :-
-----------

# Gingelly oil is good for health so be generous in adding, also it adds a nice flavor. You can replace it with ghee or coconut oil or simply the regular cooking oil. If using ghee, serve immediately.
# You can also add peanuts, almonds or cashews for a crunchy taste.

# For a healthier version for kids, toss some extra veggies of your choice and make it wholesome.
# For a tangy flavor, drizzle few drops pf lemon juice in the end.
#
Adjust the quantity of idli-podi, as per the spiciness of your idli-podi.
# Similarly you can make the sweeter version using ghee, sugar and cardamom powder.
