Kovakkai Thogayal is a spicy rice accompaniment from Andhra cuisine. I have already posted Kovakkai Chutney recipe. The main difference between chutney and thogayal is that, chutney is served as an tiffin accompaniment. Whereas, Thogayal is coarsely grounded and served with steamed rice.

1). Wash, trim the ends and thinly slice the kovakkai, keep aside. Heat oil and saute urad dal, channa dal and cumin. Saute till the dals turns golden brown.
2). Add the roughly chopped onions, garlic, red chillies, curry leaves and saute the onions till golden brown. Switch off and let it cool.
3). Heat oil in a pan, add the sliced kovakkai and saute till turns golden brown. Switch of and let it cool. Once cooled add the sauteed items together in the blender. Then add tamarind, coconut and grind it coarsely. Done !
