Murungakai Kara Kuzhambu is a famous and popular south-Indian rice accompaniment.
Ingredients :-

Drumstick | 2 |
Onions (Shallots) | ¼ cup |
Tomato | 1 |
Garlic | 6 |
Tamarind | Medium lemon size |
Curry Leaves | few |
Turmeric powder | ¼ tsp |
Coriander powder | 1 tsp |
Chilli powder | 2 tsp |
Mustard | ¼ tsp |
Gingelly Oil | 1 tsp |
Salt | to taste |
Fennel | 1 tsp |
Fenugreek | ½ tsp |
Pepper | ½ tsp |
Garlic | 2 |
Grated Coconut | 3 tbsp |
Method :-

1). Grind the ingredients listed under "To grind" section to a fine paste with little water. Soak tamarind in water and extract the tamarind juice. Chop drumstick into medium pieces. keep them aside.
2). Heat Oil in a pan, add mustard and let it splutter. Then add Onions and garlic cloves along with curry leaves. Saute till it turns golden brown. Then add tomatoes and fry till soft.
3). Add the drumstick pieces and saute for a minute. Then add the grounded mixture with 1/2 cup water. Mix well.
4). Add the tamarind extract along with salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder, chilli powder and combine well. Cook covered in medium flame until the drumstick pieces gets cooked and Kuzhambu gets thick.
Serve with steamed rice, appalam & kootu.

# Shallots suits well for this Kuzhambu, it adds taste. I did not have shallots so used big onions. It was equally good too.
# You can add any vegetable of your choice. Brinjal & drumstick suits well.
# Gingelly oil not only gives nice flavor & taste, but it also helps to reduce the body heat developed by tamarind.
